Michael W. Marcellin joined the University of Arizona in 1988, and currently serves as Regents Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and International Foundation for Telemetering Chaired Professor. He is a Faculty Fellow Teaching) and a UA Honors Professor. Marcellin was a major contributor to JPEG2000, and wrote the image compression specification used today for the distribution and exhibition of digital cinema. He received the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award and the IEEE Signal Processing Society Senior Best Paper) Award. In 2003, he was named the San Diego State University Distinguished Engineering Alumnus. He is a fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the engineering honor societies Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. He has received numerous teaching awards from National Technological University, IEEE Eta Kappa Nu students and the UA College of Engineering.
