Zooarchaeology is the study of animal remains found at archaeological sites in order to understand the interactions between past human societies and animals. This field involves the identification, analysis, and interpretation of animal bones, teeth, shells, and other remains to reconstruct diet, subsistence strategies, animal domestication, trade networks, and other aspects of human-animal relationships in the past. Zooarchaeologists use a range of techniques, including osteology, stable isotope analysis, and ancient DNA analysis, to study animal remains and gain insights into past human behavior and the environment in which they lived.
