About

Genesis Arizmendi, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Assistant Professor with appointments in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Cognitive Science. As an interdisciplinary clinician-scientist, she is dedicated to community-centered, representative science that drives systemic change across disciplines and into practice. After earning her PhD, Dr. Arizmendi expanded her expertise through postdoctoral training in Educational Psychology at the University of New Mexico and Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Center for Equity Promotion. Dr. Arizmendi is the director of the Bilingualism and the Brain in Education and Language (BABEL) Lab, where her research aims to mitigate disparities within educational and healthcare systems, focusing on Spanish-English speaking communities. Dr. Arizmendi interrogates how policy and social context influence bilingual development and educational outcomes. Building upon her clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist, she uses implementation science frameworks to examine the intersection of cognition, language, and academic achievement in bilingual children with diverse learning profiles, spanning typical development, developmental language disorder, and difficulties with mathematics and reading.
