Jose D. Fonseca is a math instructor at mathematics department of the University of Arizona. He was born and raised in Sonora, Mexico. He came to the University of Arizona in 1993 and received his Master’s Degree in 1995 with a focus in Multicultural Math Education. His education has been focused toward the teaching of mathematics and some background in Civil Engineering and Architectural Drafting. Also, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a concentration in teaching methods from La Universidad de Guerrero, Mexico. He has over thirty five years of teaching experience. A considerable part of his teaching experience includes public schools, colleges and universities with a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. As a math instructor at the University of Arizona he has taught: calculus, college algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and mathematics for prospective elementary school teachers-Math302A/B and practicum for Secondary Mathematics Education Program-Math494C. Also, he has collaborated on several research projects focused on social and cultural factors: Bridge Project and MAAPS. He has been working with teachers, schools, districts, and organizations to promote the student transition from high school to college and equity for minorities. For example, he worked in GEAR UP Project with a cohort of approximately 3,500 students helping them to aspire, plan, and apply for college. College math preparation was a definite emphasis of his job. He is very interested in collaborating with his new colleagues in the math courses for Elementary School Teachers and Secondary Mathematics Education Programs.
