Associate Clinical Professor, Family and Community Medicine - (Clinical Series Track)
I completed my medical training MBBCh) at The University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa in 1987 and did my internshiat the Johannesburg Hospital. Thereafter I held a series of positions before immigrating to the USA in 1993. I completed my Family Medicine residency training in 1997 at the Highland Hospital/University of Rochester Family Medicine Residency Program in Rochester New York. This 42-year-old program is arguably the one of the premiere training programs in the US and the world. Rochester is also the epicenter of the ‘biopsychosocial model’ developed by George Engel and this remains a core part of my practice of medicine and teaching. On completion of my residency training, I passed my specialty board exams to become a Board-Certified specialist family physician. During my tenure with the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine I did a faculty development fellowship. My areas of interest are broad and include the ever burgeoning field of evidence-based medicine EBM) and more specifically ‘patient-centered point-point-of care EBM’, In July 2012 I graduated with distinction with an MSc in International Primary Health Care from the University of London. The degree focused on organizational change at all levels including guideline implementation, and on improving service delivery. Throughout there was a strong emphasis on research in primary care. Before moving to Tucson and joining Banner Health and the University of Arizona I lived and worked in Tuba City AZ serving the Navajo and Hopi Nations for close to four years. I am based at the BUMG Alvernon Family Medicine Clinic and Residency Program. Here I see patients and supervise and teach residents. I am an Associate Clinical Professor with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and ClerkshiDirector for the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
