The Western region of the US (California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada) is home to a remarkable diversity of Native American communities, each with its own linguistic and cultural heritage. In total, approximately 160 Federally Recognized Tribes reside in this region, many of which support more than one distinct language and culture. Additionally, this region is home to a number of important collaboratives and institutes, including the Breath of Life (BL) Institute housed at UC Berkeley, and the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival (AICLS), and the American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI), housed in the University of Arizona's College of Education. We propose a West Regional Language Center to be housed within AILDI and supported by the University of Arizona (UA) and three Tribal Colleges – the Tohono O’odham Community College (TCC), the San Carlos Apache College (SCAC) and Diné College (DC). With AILDI's existing programming as its centerpiece, the Center would extend the activities by: providing support and advocacy for the inclusion of Native American languages in local, state, and regional educational systems providing training and technical assistance in implementing evidence-based pedagogical strategies, assessments, qualifications, and processes for Native American language medium instruction providing technical assistance to Native American Language Programs seeking other Federal resources; and providing consultation and support for Tribal language programs in the region in implementing and sustaining effective curriculum and other language work.
