The University of Arizona, Deaf Studies program proposes the Educational Interpreting Emphasis to improve the quality and increase the number of high quality educational interpreters for deaf and hard of hearing children in rural and urban PK – 12 settings. Integrated training and practice opportunities will be provided at the baccalaureate level. Partnerships have been implemented with professional development sites in the Tucson Unified School District and Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind-Statewide Cooperative Programs. The project addresses the chronic shortage of educational interpreters by preparing 60 educational interpreters in five years.
