As part of the Project GO Program, The University of Arizona will provide Domestic and Overseas Arabic language instruction consisting of semester-long instruction and a minimum of 8 weeks and/or 150 contact hours during the summer to ROTC students nationwide with the goal of helping students to reach an ILR 1, ILR 1+, or ILR 2 proficiency level. In addition, the Subrecipient provides extra-curricular tutoring and culturally appropriate activities during the academic year to maximize immersion. The programs will continue to integrate and adopt effective, technology-enhanced language learning methodologies both stateside and abroad. While students learn Modern Standard Arabic in addition to local dialects in the domestic and overseas programs, they also enjoy interacting with native speakers who function as peer language partners in both settings and guest speakers with expertise on the region. To promote additional immersion, the domestic program houses students in Arabic-speaking dorms with native speaker mentors while the students who head abroad are housed in carefully vetted and trained homestays within walking distance of school. The PI, Dr. Sonia Shiri, will continue to work closely with ROTC leaders and academic advisors from all three UA ROTC programs to support Project GO and offer students the option of joining the UA Arabic Flagship Program and/or declaring the recently established Arabic B.A. degree in response to Project GO needs and with the support from the commanding officers. Goals/Objectives: Subrecipient’s Project GO goals for 2022-2023 ROTC participants include 1) reaching ILR 1, ILR 1+, or ILR 2 proficiency in speaking, listening, and reading of Arabic through a variety of pathways; 2) supporting extra-curricular and cultural activities throughout the summer and academic year; 3) supporting overseas summer study for participants through Subrecipients’ intensive program in Morocco and Jordan.
