The University of Arizona Center for the Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) proposes an evidence-based approach to the significant mathematics needs resulting from unfinished learning, Re-Engaging Aspirational Learners (Getting REAL). Aspirational Learners are children with significant needs resulting from missed learning opportunities due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Getting REAL program is designed for the specific needs of Aspirational Learners. The program provides schools with a focused mathematics intervention program that can be delivered before or after school, during school, or over the summer. The program’s strategy is to re-engage K-8 learners in school and in mathematics through 108 sessions designed for learners’ unique needs: maximum engagement, healthy collaboration, and excitement for learning. The program’s strategies include helping educators understand effective ways to teach mathematics in the post-pandemic classroom to students that experienced significant unfinished learning. The CRR provides teachers with year-long training and coaching support, ensuring they have the knowledge and understanding to successfully facilitate the program while encouraging similar instructional shifts in their classroom. The program provides learners and teachers with the tools and understanding to recover learning and connection. Our goals include improving students' disposition towards mathematics (Goal 1), increasing students’ connection to the school community (Goal 2), and increasing students’ understanding of foundational mathematics (Goal 3)
