Project overview: This program will allow us to continue to expand our training and certification of nurses in rural and medically underserved areas within HRSA Region 9 of the United States. SANE training will be focused on nurses and programs in Arizona, Hawaii and the United States Associated Pacific Islands (USAPI). SANE Certification support will cover these states, as well as Nevada and California. Arizona has the potential to be a training hub for the region and has significant buy-in from partners across the state. The focus on the USAPI and Hawaii comes from the success the UArizona SANE Program has had over the past 2 ½ years and the need for continued support since these islands otherwise have such limited resources to obtain training. Two and a half-day clinical skills labs will be offered at the University of Arizona Simulation Lab for nurses located throughout Arizona. For the USAPI and Hawaii trainees, our SANE trainers on staff, and IAFN staff, will ensure that the clinical skills labs can be held on the islands. The best way the program can support SANEs in Nevada and California is through funding certification exams. The program has gained much traction within Region 9 through the initial HRSA ANE-SANE grant. To sustain this forward motion, additional funds, support, and commitments are needed. Objectives: The program will recruit 42 nurses in year one and 52 in years 2 and 3, to complete the IAFN online didactic course, and obtain clinical training for SANE-Adult and/or SANE- Pediatric. This is a total of 146 nurses over 3 years who will be trained as SANEs. Two cohorts of nurses will be trained; community nurses and graduate nursing students at the University of Arizona. Ten SANEs will be supported each year to take continuing education classes through one of our partners and through the WRPHTC. An additional 20 nurses will be funded each year to sit for the SANE certification exam through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN). The program will also expand the resources of nine locations to conduct quality forensic sexual assault exams. Request for the Statutory Funding: We are requesting statutory funding preference given the UArizona focus is on recruiting nurses from rural areas where the nurses will be from and much of our training will take place. We also will be funding nurses who may reside in a more urban area but are able to provide sexual assault services to rural and medically underserved areas.
