Abstract

The University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (AzCIM) is internationally renowned as the leader in integrative medical education. Since 1994, the Center has developed, implemented, and evaluated innovative, national education models to teach healthcare professionals evidence-based practices to effect lifestyle change, prevent illness, and more effectively manage chronic disease. AzCIM and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM) in cooperation with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will create the Center for Integrative Medicine in Primary Care (CIMPC) in collaboration with leading national stakeholder organizations including, among others, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR), and the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care (ACCAHC). The CIMPC will build on the work of the Integrative Medicine in Preventive Medicine Education (IMPriME) initiative to develop a set of interprofessional (IP) core competencies for health professionals across the primary care disciplines (including medicine, nursing, public health, behavioral medicine, pharmacy and others) and an online evidence-based curriculum to advance the incorporation of these competencies into primary care. The CIMPC will create the necessary infrastructure to support the incorporation of competency- and evidence-based integrative medicine (IM) curricula into existing educational programs and will provide faculty development, technical assistance, and dissemination of best practices in IM. At the public level, the CIMPC will address the health disparities for IM primary care of underserved populations by providing guidelines for access to care and culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education materials. The ultimate goal of this program is to create effective IP teams that will work towards using integrative medicine to help eliminate health disparities in primary care and promote healthy communities. The following are the specific and measurable objectives the project will accomplish: 1.Establish a national IP leadership team to collaborate with the CIMPC leadership in developing interprofesional integrative medicine competencies and curricula for primary care, provide technical assistance and serve as the linkage to national and regional partner organizations. 2.Develop core IM competencies for IP primary care teams. 4.Create an accessible and interactive online infrastructure that will house and link IM curricula and best practices for primary health care professions as well as a patient portal for IM resources. 5.Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate patient education material in IM approaches to prevention and treatment of common chronic medical conditions and facilitate access to IM practitioners committed to working with underserved populations. The CIMPC will oversee the development and rigorous evaluation of the competency- based IM curriculum for primary care. The CIMPC interactive online infrastructure will serve as a clearinghouse for existing training programs for health professional trainees and practicing primary care providers and as a portal for a diverse community of consumers with an emphasis on underserved populations. A comprehensive faculty development program will be established through online curricula, webinars, and experiential workshops. In collaboration with the extensive network of partner organizations the CIMPC work and educational products will be widely disseminated.
