Our current research interests are the manner in which the processes involved in learning and memory consolidation depend on sleep and emotions; the neural substrates of PTSD; and the neural substrate of empathy. Our focus is on the role of substances called neuromodulators (e.g. acetylcholine, dopamine). We use a multi-disciplinary approach that includes in vitro and in vivo neurophysiology in rats, psychophysical tests in humans and computational models in computers. In collaboration with others, we also are interested in how knowledge about the brain can help in the building of better robots.Show Less
